July 2 (Renewables Now) - Kuwait is preparing to launch a tender for the next 2-GW phase of the Shagaya wind-and-solar complex in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2020.

The Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) made the announcement on Sunday, without revealing details. It confirmed that the third phase of the project will combine solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, concentrated solar power (CSP) and wind turbines.

Phase one of Shagaya, fully completed in 2018, has 50 MW of CSP capacity built by TSK of Spain, as well as 10 MW of solar and 10 MW of wind. Phase two, whose construction is being overseen by Kuwait National Petroleum Co, is a 1.5-GW solar PV park, known as the Dabdaba project.

The Shagaya project supports Kuwait’s goal of reaching a 15% renewable energy share by 2030. According to the Kuwait Energy Outlook (KEO) report, the country’s renewable power capacity will reach 5 GW in 2035, but it will not be enough to meet the target. Currently, just 80 MW of Kuwait’s 18.84 GW of power capacity is renewable.
