Adaptation of Concentrated Solar Power in Cement Industry
2018.04.10 From: climatenza
Most of the talk about renewable energy is aimed at electricity production. However, most of the energy Industries need is heat, which solar panels and wind turbines cannot produce efficiently. To power industrial processes like the Cement Plants,
the smelting of metals or the production of microchips, we need a renewable source of thermal energy. A large share of energy consumed worldwide is by heat. Heat dominates industrial energy consumption. In the UK, 76 percent of industrial energy consumption is heat. In Europe, this is 67 percent.
Heat represents three-quarters of industrial energy demand worldwide, and half of it is of low to medium-high temperature. Cement is the third-largest energy consumer in the industry sector, accounting for 7% of total final industrial energy use, but due to important process emissions, cement has the second-largest share of CO2 emissions from industry at 27%, i.e. 6.5% of total energy-related CO2 emissions. This share is projected to double by 2050 under the 2DS, putting the cement subsector in first place. More than half of the cement industry’s CO2 emissions are process emissions from the clinker production process, in which limestone (CaCO3) is heated to produce lime (CaO) and thus release CO2. However, process emissions are partially compensated for by the reverse reaction when the cement is used in construction, including in concrete, as it absorbs atmospheric CO2 by carbonation of lime into limestone. The share of atmospheric CO2 absorbed over (possibly very long) time by buildings has been assessed at 43% of the initial process emissions.
CLIMATENZA has realized that strong business growth can be achieved by sustaining manufacturing in an eco-friendly manner. Most of the new cement plants are adopting green processes and green power generation to reduce Green-House-Gas (GHG) emissions. However, majority of them (more than 90%) are still based on traditional Coal/gas powered energy. CLIMATENZA is building next generation Solar thermal Power Plants using advance Engineering Designs and Operations with a vision to decrease the Carbon emissions from the Cement plants and cut their power bills by 10-15% depending upon the size of the Power Plant. Our Vision is to accelerate and amplify the introduction of solar Thermal power into the global energy market with maximum economic, social, and environmental reward. Our mission is to develop and deploy the best value parabolic trough technology solution for our target customers by providing the industry-leading combination of low-cost with the highest levels of performance and reliability.
Case Study was performed over Pacasmayo Power plant in Peru. Cement is the essence and reason for Pacasmayo existence. Their history starts with the construction and startup of their main cement plant in Pacasmayo, 55 years ago, followed by the purchase of Rioja cement plant in 1998. In addition, they are currently building their third cement plant in Piura. Pacasmayo plant has a designated capacity of 2.9 million MT of cement per year. Imagine the Amount of CO2 emissions emitted resulting in the power usage by Coal Plants and the Heat loss.
Therefore, with CLIMATENZA’s parabolic Trough Thermal solar Power plants, there will be reduction in the amount of the CO2 emitted, cut in the Power Bills and a movement towards Green energy and Sustainability.
